Aim and Outlines

Aim of the Project Area/Unit system

The new Project Area/Unit system of IRIDeS was started in April 2016 to enhance our research activities and to support local needs in society appropriately through various fields of natural science,  social environment, culture, and history.

As we have started the new system, we will systematize preparedness against complex disasters based on the lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, and contribute to domestic and international disaster management (such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction).

Outlines of Project Area of Comprehensive DRM

Based on the lessons from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami disaster, IRIDeS aims to become a world center for the study of disasters and disaster mitigation. IRIDeS innovates from the past paradigm of Japan and the world’s disaster management of catastrophic natural disasters, to become a foundation stone of disaster mitigation management and science.

Considering “action-oriented research,” all members of IRIDeS should be aware of the importance of collaboration between research activities and local and national society, and contribute to disaster mitigation substantially.

“The Comprehensive DRM Project Area” aims to propose and implement “action-oriented research” of disaster management concretely from a comprehensive point of view.
